Aboriginal Programs

It is with sadness that we announce the end of the Coyote Cafe After School Literacy Program in School District No. 83 as of April 30, 2016.

Coyote DesignSince 2011 the Aboriginal Education Department of School District No. 83, the Literacy Alliance of the Shuswap Society (LASS), and many school district staff and community partners have supported this wonderful program for Aboriginal students in many of our school communities.

Coyote Cafe started as a pilot program at South Broadview Elementary School in 2011, and over the years has been held at MV Beattie, Parkview, and Salmon Arm West elementary schools, as well as Carlin Elementary-Middle School and Shuswap Middle School.

The time has come to explore alternate ways of delivering effective literacy support to our Aboriginal learners. The Aboriginal Education Department, First Nations Education Council, and school staff will be working together to create new learning opportunities for our students so they can continue to receive additional literacy support.

For more information contact North Okanagan-Shuswap School District No. 83.

The Literacy Alliance of the Shuswap Society (LASS) will be exploring new ways of reaching Aboriginal literacy learners. We will be updating this page once we have a concrete plan for our Aboriginal Literacy Program.
